3-4 Year Olds Nursery - Sunflowers Class 2017 - 2018

Mrs Bartane Elek

Nursery Sunflowers Class Teacher (3-4 Year Olds)

Welcome to Nursery Sunflowers Class

Our class teacher is Mrs Barta, we have 2 teaching assistants Mrs Jackson and Miss James.
All nursery staff help children to learn and develop through both child led and adult led activities. Children develop quickly in the Early years, and teachers aim to do all they can to help all children to have the best possible start to school life.

In Nursery, children learn through play, talk, exploration and observation of the world around them. They have the opportunity to pursue their own, child-initiated activities and interests, as well as adult-led activities and topics, and have daily phonics and maths sessions. They can also use the improved outside learning area, which they share with reception class. This helps them to develop their learning in a stimulating learning environment.

The Areas of Learning and Development are divided into 7 areas, with 3 prime areas which are the key to children's further development and there are 4 more specific areas which will develop once a child has developed the skills needed from the prime areas.

Prime areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of development is about how children become confident and self-assured; manage their feelings and behaviour; makes friends and shares and takes turns.

Communication and Language Development

This area of development is about how children listen and pay attention; understand what is being said; communicate with others and develop vocabulary and speech.

Physical Development

This area of development is about how children move and use gross motor skills; develop fine motor skills; learnabout healthy eating and manage self-care independently.
As part of our continuous provision the children have access to the outdoor area at all times. We have P.E. lession on every Thursday.

We also enjoy our regular ‘Dough Disco’. This supports children in developing their fine motor skills.

Specific areas:

Mathematics

Key mathematical skills will be taught through number rhyme, songs and small group teaching. We practice our counting every day and are learning to spot shapes in the environment.

Literacy

We have a keen interest in books in Foundation Stage. We will develop your child’s love of reading using stories, puppets and props to engage, motivate and inspire them to achieve their full potential.

Understanding the World

We will learn about the world around us through active experiences.  Children will also have the opportunity to develop ICT skills.

Expressive Art and Design

The children will have daily access to a range of materials which they can use to create paintings, drawings and 3D models. Their imagination will be exercised through role play, storytelling, dance and art.

Our Topic

This term after the very popular minibeasts theme, firstly we will be learning about Farm animals and Zoo animals. We are going to play animal games, do animal roleplay, listen to animal stories, make animal homes, create our own farm and jungle.

After that our next theme will be all about Journeys. Within this we will be reading stories about journeys, reading street maps, facts and features of different form of transport, talking about how we come to school. We will pack our suitcase with items which we need to go on a pretend holiday. We will be writing postcards from our journey to our family. We will be  making cars, buses, trains, planes and numberplates.

In phonics we will be continuing to listen to the first sound in words, trying to identify them. The children will be learning to write their name with some of the letters being formed correctly.

We will be counting reliably to 10 and in some cases beyond, learning to recognise numerals and using lots of songs, stories and rhymes to help us count accurately and reliably. Also matching a numeral to the correct quantity.

How you can help at home:

*talk to your child about numbers they see in their environment, e.g.: during shopping, waiting for a bus

*ensure that your child has lots of opportunities to count e.g.:at dinner times, during play,  counting the stairs.
