Y3 Poplar Class 2017 - 2018

Mrs Moss

Y3 Poplar Class Teacher

Welcome to Year 3 Poplar Class!

My name is Mrs Moss and I am the class teacher.  In Year 3 we are very lucky to be supported by Mrs Nash.We know that every child in our class is going to achieve great things this year and we here to support them to progress further, inspire them to want to learn and to have fun!

Summer Half Term 2

Reading is very important in Year 3!  We complete guided reading weekly in class and we complete individual reading as much as possible. Please ensure your child brings their reading diary and book into school everyday.  We try to encourage the children to read a book at least twice before they can swap it , however you are able to access the school library with your child after school every Thursday for additional books.

Reading with your child every night ( even just a few pages) is so important and a very effective way to support your child to make progress.  Talking about the story, characters and their favourite parts is great for comprehension skills too!

This term we will be continuing to read  The Scarabs Secret by Nick Would.  We are really enjoying this story and it is inspiring us to learn across a range of subjects such as geography, history, art and much more! We will be basing all of our writing around this story and Acient Egypt. We will be learning to write diaries, poems, creating newspaper reports and writing instructions.

This term the children are continuing to use Singapore maths.  We will be  studying time, money, angles and shape.  The children must continue to practice and learn their multiplication tables and we will continue with weekly practice sessions!

Linking Our Thinking and Science

This term we are continuing with our subject Acient Egypt and the children will be completing activities linked to our class text The Scarabs Secret.  We are finding this topic extremely interesting and are excited to learn more! The children will be making their own mummy and studying mummification, We will also be looking at life in Acient Egypt, designing an Egyptian smoothie, studying the life of Pharohs and completeing map work, in particular locating Egypt. We are going to be very busy! I cant wait!

Our topic in science is rocks and fossils.  The children will be conducting a range of experiments, writing up their own predictions and results.

The children will also be taking part in weekly Gospel choir lessons- with another fantasic performance towards the end of term!

We have P.E on a Wednesday, but the children are encouraged to leave their P.E kits in school for the half term for extra sessions, clubs and lunchtime activities.

P.E kits should include a white t shirt, black shorts or leggings and pumps or trainers.  Due to health and safety children will be asked to remove earrings for physical activity or they will be covered with a plaster.

Homework will be sent out every Friday and we would like it returned to school by Thursday please.  Spellings will be practiced on a Tuesday and a Thursday.  A year three spelling list is available in the front of your child’s homework book.

We will  be practicing the 3, 4 and 8 times table alongside consolidating the 2, 5 and 10 times tables learnt in Year 2.  The children will also be expected to know the corresponding division facts.

How can you help?

Any extra time you can spare to support your child with reading and homework is greatly appreciated and will make a difference! The children have also been given a log in for either reading eggs or reading plus, which have super activities which help support reading online (ipad, tablet, laptop, phone) and they are really fun!  They also have a log in for Mathletics, which again helps support with number and is a fun activity for the children to complete.  Prizes will be give out in assembly for the top scorers!

Please come and see us if you have any questions or concerns.  We look forward to working with you and your children!
